Press Release
Introducing ‘Gu Deas’ the exciting and long-awaited album from Màiri MacMillan. Gu Deas meaning south or southern, also accomplished, skilful and ready, curates beautifully traditional Gaelic songs mostly from South Uist with fresh contemporary arrangements. The album features songs covering a range of themes and genres including love songs, mythical songs, and waulking songs.
From Milton in South Uist, Màiri MacMillan was brought up surrounded by Gaelic language, culture, music, and song. She comes from a family with a strong Gaelic background. Gaelic is her first language and Gaelic songs, and traditions, are always an important part of family life.
Màiri’s album Gu Deas features songs with contemporary arrangements, mostly learned from recordings of South Uist tradition bearers. The album was arranged and produced by the creative, skilled and talented musician Mhairi Hall. Alongside Mhairi (harmonium, piano, flute, and whistle), it features wonderfully talented musicians, Megan Henderson (fiddle and voice), Ali Hutton (bodhrán, guitar, whistle, great highland bagpipes) and Rachel Newton (clàrsach, electric harp and voice).
