Maggie learned the songs on this album from recordings of her mother, well-known traditional singer Flora MacNeil MBE (1928-2015), recorded between 1955 and 1961 by Australian- born folklorist, Dr James Kalokerinos. Flora got the songs from her mother, grandmother, aunt, uncle and others surrounding her as she grew up on the island of Barra in the Western Isles of Scotland. The archive contains many songs which Flora helped make popular today but also some seldom heard gems which Maggie is very excited to share.

With support from Creative Scotland, Maggie has been able to digitise the original recordings, develop a show called “The Kalokerinos Tapes” which pays tribute to Flora and the other Tradition Bearers who passed the songs on to her, and to record this album.

All of the songs on the album have been chosen very carefully by Maggie for their beauty and variety and, by adding fresh innovative arrangements, she hopes that the songs will be enjoyed for generations to come.

Maggie was delighted to work with some extremely talented musicians including her son, Calum Park (Guitar, Fiddle and backing vocals), Dan Brown(piano and electronics and backing vocals), Robyn Gray(fiddle and backing vocals), Ailis Sutherland(pipes, flute, whistle and backing vocals), Wendy Weatherby(cello and backing vocals) and Alex Palmer(percussion and backing vocals).

The album is called “Uiseagan Bharraigh” which means “Barra Skylarks” to represent Maggie’s mother, her family and all those who have carried and continue to carry these songs.

An early recipient of the BBC Scots Trad Music Awards’ “Gaelic Singer of the Year,” Maggie has been involved in various groups and has travelled widely with her music at home and abroad. This is Maggie’s seventh solo album and in the last couple of years her singing has also been featured on the video games, Still Wakes the Deep and Siren’s Rest (released by The Chinese Room).

Maggie and her band are touring in Scotland this summer with her show, “The Kalokerinos Tapes”. More information about Maggie, her music and performance dates is available at her website www.maggiemacinnes.co.uk
