Just over 100 years ago, George Gershwin composed his Rhapsody in Blue for the Paul Whiteman Orchestra, combining elements of classical, jazz and blues. It remains one of the most iconic orchestral pieces today.

Tim Kliphuis and his Trio celebrate 20 years of touring together by presenting a brand-new, virtuosic Rhapsody that swings, grooves and dazzles. With their trademark high-octane sound, the three play the role of orchestra and soloist, bringing back the free-flowing improvisational energy that Gershwin’s timeless melodies deserve.

Tim Kliphuis:
“The Rhapsody has been on my mind forever, as it’s right up our alley as a jazz-classical crossover Trio. Listening to it, I was always frustrated by two things: some of Gershwin’s inspired melodies get so little time to develop, and the orchestral recordings of this piece fail to capture its swing and groove. So we set out to improve these points with our new version, and I think we’ve succeeded!”

Also on the album are some of Gershwin’s most famous jazz pieces, including a solo guitar rendition of “I Loves You Porgy” from “Porgy and Bess”. To finish, a rip-roaring “Hoedown for the Common Man” based on the music of Aaron Copland and others.

The Tim Kliphuis Trio look back on a band career that has many high points: playing to crowds of thousands at the Amsterdam Canal Concert, or with the Cape Town Philharmonic outdoors; accompanying the Dutch King and Queen on their Royal State visit to Sweden; and kicking off the United Nations Water Summit in 2023. But they built up their loyal fanbase touring rural venues and this is where the current album was conceived.
